You’ve Joined The Gym, Now What?

So, you’ve finally taken the first step towards a healthier, happier you and joined the gym. The only problem is, you’re not quite sure what to do now? Should you immediately hit the treadmill or should you take a more organized approach to working out? As someone who loves heading to the gym for a workout, I would say it’s best to take a slightly more organized approach. Just to ensure that you not only get the most out of your membership but also so that you enjoy working out. To help you do that, below are the steps that I would recommend taking after joining the gym.

Step 1: Book an induction

Most gyms require you to book an induction before you can use their facilities. So, the first thing that you do after signing up to the gym should be booking an induction. You should be able to choose whether this is a solo or group induction – choose whatever you feel most comfortable with. All an induction is, is a guided tour of the gym, where an instructor will show you around the equipment and will explain how to use each piece safely. Remember, this is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

Step 2: Order some sportswear

If you’re going to make the most of your time at the gym, it’s a good idea to ensure that you have the right sportswear. Because, if you don’t, you may find exercising uncomfortable or may be more prone to injuries. So, it’s important to order yourself the correct sportswear. Ideally, you’ll want to get a couple of pairs of sports leggings, a sports bra, a sports top, and a pair of good quality running trainers. Believe it or not, buying your sportswear doesn’t have to be expensive. Especially if you take advantage of any deals and discounts that are on offer online. For instance, websites like, often have deals for quality sportswear companies.

Step 3: Decide what your aim is

It’s important that before you start working out, that you know what your aim is. You may already know what you want to achieve, or you may not be 100 percent sure. It’s important to determine what you want to get out of the gym, as the type of workout you do will depend on this. For instance, how you should workout if you want to lose fat is slightly different to how you should workout if you want to build muscle.

Step 4: Put a fitness plan in place

If you’re going to stick to working out regularly, it’s a good idea to put an exercise plan in place. This should say what days you will head to the gym at and how long for, it could even include what you’ll do while you’re there. Next to each scheduled workout session put a tick box that you can put a tick in once you’ve completed the workout. By setting out a plan that says when you will workout, you should be more motivated to stick to it. To get an idea of what you will need to do to achieve your goal, sites like can be useful.

So there you have it, a guide to the steps that you need to take after signing up for a gym membership. Hopefully, the tips above should help you to make the most out of your gym membership and ensure that you achieve the results that you’re hoping for. Don’t forget, your diet is also incredibly important!
