Why We’re “More Obese Than Ever” – And What To Do About It

We’re forever hearing that the country we live in, and the world in general, is fatter and lazier than ever before. Most usually in the media we see columnists chiding the general public about it. We’re a nation gone soft. Our grandparents wouldn’t have stood for it. Maybe we should go back to rationing! As someone who has only lived in this era, it can feel as though you’re being held personally responsible.

Part of the problem, of course, is that it’s pointless to compare statistics from today with those from our grandparents’ time. Things are different now. The way we live has changed. Even if you wanted to live the way people did in the 1950s, it’s really not possible. The jobs we do are different; nobody worked in IT in 1950 because it didn’t exist! We live the way we can live – which often means we don’t have the time for things our ancestors did.

Add to this the fact that food options are geared towards higher calories and convenience, and it’s no surprise if we are a little larger. Most of our jobs are more sedentary, so it’s hard to have time to exercise. Staying healthy is a challenge in itself.

So do we just give up? No, of course not, but we need to get more creative. If for no other reason than to shut those columnists up, right?

Can’t Get To The Gym? Bring The Gym To You!

Unless you have a very large house (another thing that’s harder these days), you obviously can’t fit a full gym in there. So you need to pick and choose exercise equipment and really make it count. An exercise bike is always worth having. So is an elliptical trainer. It’s worth reading over your options before you decide what to buy. As money isn’t always easy to lay your hands on, getting value is essential.

Set Yourself A Shopping Challenge

We always go into supermarkets with the best of intentions. We will buy healthy stuff. We will eat it, too, and not throw it in the bin after snapping and getting takeaways three days in a row. And yet, we find ourselves back in the same place time and again.

A lot of us need incentives to focus on behaving the right way. Plan a fantastic holiday or a purchase you’ve been coveting for months. But the catch is you can only have it if you stick within a harsh shopping and food budget for three or four weeks. Fresh fruit and veg are cheaper than you think – so it’s easier if you pick salads and healthy food.

Start A Healthy Eating Club At Work

It’s not news to anyone that cooking with fresh ingredients takes longer than putting something in the microwave. And we are more pressed for time these days. Sharing some of the burden of healthy cooking can relieve the pressure a bit.

Get as many people as possible to join in, and each week one or two of them can cook one or more meals, in large enough quantities for everyone involved. It allows everyone to eat a more varied diet, discover new cuisines and avoid junk food.

There are other options too – the more strings you have to your bow the better. It’s not easy staying fit these days – but it is possible.
