This type of scenario is a lot more common than you might think. In fact, it describes me perfectly. Many of us hated sports in school or college, yet grew to love it as we got older. In a lot of cases, this is because we moved from team sports to individual sports. It always sounds a little negative when you say ‘I’m not a team player’, but in terms of sports, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It simply means that you operate more efficiently alone, without relying on other people. Swimming

Swimming has been given a new lease of life recently thanks to the Olympic Games and megastars such as Michael Phelps. It is perfect for those who want to avoid high-intensity exercise, or for those who are just getting started on their fitness journey. Or, if you’re a sportsperson who is currently injured, it can be a great way to stay active whilst regaining your health.This is because it’s low impact. Swimming is a perfect all over body workout, using most of the muscles in the body. 

Running

Running is either loved or hated, but there’s no denying that it’s a great way to become more active, get fitter and lose weight. Plus, if you’re not a team person, it is the ideal form of exercise. If casual jogging isn’t your thing, consider taking part in local competitions. Many people find it much more motivating to compete against others, so see what is going on in your area. We’ve all watched tennis competitions like Wimbledon and giggled at the infamous grunts players make whilst hitting the ball. But, in all seriousness, tennis can be a great way to up your overall fitness. It is cardiovascular, as you will need to be on your toes at all times, and it can also improve your agility when you are lunging for the ball. There are also other pros to tennis that aren’t just to do with fitness, such as improving your concentration or your hand to eye coordination.

Horse riding

This might not be the first sport that comes to mind when you’re looking to get fit, but horseback riding is a great option for those looking for a fun individual sport to take part in. The good thing about riding is that it can be as high-intensity to as low-intensity as you want it to be. Go out on a gentle hack in the countryside, or brace your stomach muscles for a vicious cross-country course. Whatever you choose, it’s a great way to get fit and spend more time outdoors.
