Why I Don’t Weigh Myself…And You Shouldn’t Either

You read the title right: your eyes do not deceive you. I’m a female who does not weigh herself. All I’ve heard girls (and some boys) say lately is ‘I’ve put on *this much* over Christmas’, or, ‘I want to lose *blah blah* pounds’. I used to be exactly the same a few years back, before I really knew anything about health and fitness.

I’m not a professional by any means, but I have done a hell of a lot of research in an attempt to achieve my dream body (still in progress, BTW).

I have no idea of my weight, and I can’t remember the last time I stepped on the scales. I have no idea of what I put on over Christmas, or even if I put anything on at all. I couldn’t care less either!

Don’t get me wrong; I’m still self conscious of my body. I want to look like a Victoria’s Secret model/fitness model/any model at all just as much as everyone else. But I know that obsessively monitoring my weight is NOT going to get me there. Why?

Malia 2014, In alright shape if I do say so myself

Weight is not an accurate representation of how healthy, fit, slim, or strong you are. Nor is weight an accurate representation of how much smaller you are. The term ‘weight’ simply refers to your fat, muscle, organs, and the water in your body combined. Possibly some other stuff too, but I’m no scientist.

The scales could say you’d lost 7 pounds, for instance, which can be an awfully exciting time. But hold tight before you break out the celebration cake.

Upon measuring yourself, you realise that you haven’t lost a single inch. WTH?! So, you’ve lost ‘weight’, but you haven’t actually gotten any smaller!

Someone could also stay exactly the same according to the scales, or even put on weight, only to measure themselves and realise they are SMALLER. Woah, science, what are you doing to us?!

Weight isn’t the thing people want to lose, although they think they do thanks to the media.

People want to lose BODY FAT. Losing fat guarantees losing inches/getting smaller and leaner. It’ll give your body a better overall appearance. Weight and fat are two totally different things.

Two people of the same height and weight can look totally different thanks to the amount of body fat and muscle in their body. This is what you’d call their body compositions.

But wait a sec, you know somebody (or are somebody) who ‘lost weight’ and DID get smaller, so what am I talking about? People who concentrate on losing weight rather than fat may actually get smaller, but they can still have a soft appearance. In other words, they won’t look very ‘toned’ (I don’t like that word either, but I’ll save that for a different blog post). If you research the difference between skinny fat and skinny fit, you’ll understand what I mean!

To Sum Up:

  • Losing body fat and keeping/building muscle will change your body composition for the better.
  • Losing weight might make you smaller but won’t necessarily give you a better looking body/body composition. It’s stupid and you should smash up your scales immediately.

If you want to measure your progress in the gym/with a healthy diet, take pictures, measure yourself, and monitor your body fat percentage instead. These are much better, more accurate ways of monitoring how you’re shaping up!

Here are some tips to help you lose body FAT:

  • Never starve yourself or eat too little. You need to nourish your body. Starving yourself will make your body eat your muscle, and muscle is what gives you a ‘toned’ (I used it again, tut) appearance. Without it, you could begin to look skinny FAT.
  • Eat clean foods 80% of the time, cheat meals and treats just 20% of the time.
  • Get some exercise that you enjoy. A mix of HIIT cardio and resistance training is best. HIIT is best for fat loss while resistance is best for muscle building/maintenance.
  • No, you can’t eat what you like or have more treats if you exercise.
  • Drink 2-3 litres of water and lots of green tea every day.
  • Don’t rush, enjoy the process, and make lifestyle changes that you can stick to rather than trying to get a quick fix!

I hope I made my ramble/babble/rant easy to understand and that you still like me regardless. Ciao for now!

P.S. Yes, that is a Thug Life tattoo on my ribs.

My Christmas and New Year 2014

Long time no see! I know this post is really, really late but you’ll have to forgive me. I’ve been mega busy, and as you may already know I write for a living and the first week back at work has really taken it out of me! Anyways, I’m here now to regale you with my glorious adventures over the festive period, as well as some of my fave outfits.

First up: do you like my tree? It’s only teeny tiny in real life (donated to me and Joe by my mother), but I love it! We went Xmas decoration shopping and I decided on silver, gold, purple, and blue. Magical mermaidy colours! It was Joe’s idea to put my zombie doll, Priscilla Pendulum, on the top. He won her for me at a bonfire night fair…doesn’t she match beautifully?!

I know Christmas isn’t all about the presents, but I got some bloody good ones this year!

My boyfriend, Joe, really surprised me: Bluetooth speakers, a Buddha Pandora charm, a gorgeous Ted Baker dress (that he picked all on his own), and to top it all off…a trip to Amsterdam at the end of January (expect a post)!

I had cold hard cash from everybody else, and our apartment is overrun with nice smelly stuff.

Have a gander at some of my fave festive outfits:

So, on to Croyde. We’re always trying to think of new, inventive things to do on New Year’s Eve, and this year was no different. We decided on a weekend in the seaside town, Croyde. Everybody who we spoke to beforehand said, ‘where’s that?’. I admit, I hadn’t heard of it either. It was one of our friend’s ideas to go, as she used to visit when she was younger.

There wasn’t much to do in a seaside town with only 3 pubs during winter apart from drink and eat, but those are two of our favourite things so we were absolutely fine!

Oh, and the fact that it was insanely windy (and sometimes rainy) didn’t stop us from going to the beach…

Have an incredible 2015, and thanks for sticking with me even though I’m a little (OK, a lot) lazy!

Lots of love

XOXO

P.S. I don’t believe in all that new year’s resolution mumbo jumbo, so I’m afraid I’m probably not going to change at all!
